Blueprint 0.6 stress test

Before releasing Blueprint 0.6, I’d like to put it through its paces. If you have the time and ability, please check out the latest revision from our SVN repository, and try your utmost to brake it.
This release will be miles ahead of out current release, and is a giant leap towards version 1.0. If all goes according to plan, the versions between 0.6 and 1.0 will not bring any major changes, only subtle improvements, additions and bug fixes.
This also means that the release of 1.0 should not be too far away. :)
Here’s a quick list of the improvements in BP 0.6:
- We’re back to em units for vertical spacing, though with a much better implementation than what we had in 0.4.
- This release introduces a new plugin structure, keeping the core files light and nimble.
- Three plugins (two extracted from the 0.5 core, one new).
- A new IE stylesheet imported with conditional comments.
- A much cleaner directory structure.
- New compressor script for easy compression of core files.
- Compressed version of print.css.
- A CSS validation script.
- Greatly improved test files.
- Lots of improvements to the typography.
- .box, .clear, .append- and .prepend- 12 through 23 are back by popular demand. :)
- Loads and loads of small improvements and fixes.
This might seem like a lot of files, but while the number of bundled tools have increased, the use of plugins and a much better directory structure actually means that the CSS framework itself is lighter and more robust than ever.
Take a look at the full changelog for more details, though some changes might be missing from that as well. Also, the readme file in the SVN directory is of course the only updated documentation on 0.6.
Submit feedback in our Google Group, or by mail (olav at bjorkoy dot com).
I’ll be posting about who the people in the BP dev team actually are, and about all the new tools to use with BP in the near future.

Just testing the comment system after a few changes. :)

I am using Blueprint to recreate the Hemingway blog theme theme with a few realignments. The blog engine I am using is Mephisto.
So far so good!

So, no liquid layout in version 1.0? This (v. 0.6) layout is optimized for 1024 width monitors, right? If you have 800x600 you must scroll horizontally.
From a designer’s perspective control and proportion are utmost concerns. I sympathize with those concerns. But liquid layouts are friendlier also for folks who use screen magnification or who need to enlarge the fonts.
For example, if I have a multicolumn layout and the left column is proportionally narrow, with a liquid layout I can increase the width of the column by increasing the viewport width, thereby allowing me to keep a readable line length as font sizes increase. If I have no control over width of the layout, words per line may decrease to the point of unreadability.
Folks with reading impairments also benefit from liquid layouts for similar reasons–it allows them to adjust column widths a bit to make for a more comfortable line length.
BTW, I noticed in IE7 that the “Save” button does not render properly. It’s a square with a black border. Happy to send you a screen shot.

@Ken: I’d love to have support for liquid layouts in 1.0, it’s definitely high on our list. If you know how, feel free to suggest how you think this should be done in BP.
A direct e-mail might work better than a comment for such a suggestion.
And yes, I know about the IE bug with the save button, but thanks for reminding me. :)

Wow that’s a quick turnaround to 0.6. I look forward to testing this out.

My site ( http://h0bbel.p0ggel.org ) has just been migrated from Wordpress to Habari, with a new theme based on Blueprint CSS 0.5.
Today I upgraded to 0.6, without any issues!

Just tried out 0.5 on a new service site we’re rolling out for ExpressionEngine, and lo-and-behold version 0.6 is already out.
Thanks Olav - although the discussion regarding the structural vs. semantic CSS usage is one that I’ll always be looking out for, I think this work deserves a ton of credit, for you and (so far secret) team of developers and testers :)

In 0.4 fonts were resizable even in IE6, but it’s not the case in 0.5. Does 0.6 bring this ability back? (sorry I don’t have SVN so I can’t test by myslef…)

Looking forward to it. One thing that’s missing for me is the ability to do sub-headings. Usually you don’t want the crazy space between say an h2 and a subheading or caption underneath it (think blog headings). I’ve had to manually set negative margins on the subsequent paragraph and I’m not quite sure what they should be

Thanks for providing a great framework - I hope to be launching a new design using Blueprint soon :)

This is a great story. The podcast surprised me, because I never expected to have such a strong interview to enjoy. I want to know more about how to help preserve the planet and the animals who inhabit it.
